What not to do in South America

In case you haven’t noticed already, we’re huge fans of South America. How can you not be when they brought us the likes of Malbec and the Pisco Sour?

But we know that for first timers heading to this popular backpacker mecca, it can be a bit daunting.

So we’ve packaged up five simple, easy to swallow, ‘not-to-dos’ we recommend downing prior to your Latin adventure.

1. Don’t take or wear expensive (or expensive looking) jewellery or clothes. Leave these at home. The beauty of South America is that cargo pants, hiking shoes and alpaca sweaters are totally acceptable get-ups. No fashion faux paxes here. Whilst we’re at it, don’t take valuables full stop (unless necessary). If you must, don’t walk around the streets flashing your flashy phone like you’re Kanye. Be discreet. If you need to use your phone, do it before you leave your accommodation.

2. Don’t take the path less travelled without advice from the locals. Chat to the friendly staff/hosts at your accommodation before hitting the streets. In some cities, it’s not safe to walk alone, particularly at night. Avoid deserted streets and do we really have to say it? Use your common sense and be alert.

3. Don’t leave your luggage/bags unattended anywhere. And we mean anywhere; on the bus, at the station, at a restaurant. They should be attached to your body at all times. And when possible, it’s best to carry your bag in front of your body, out of reach from pickpockets. We’d also avoid putting your phone and wallet on the table at a restaurant. They’ll be gone before you can say ‘dos cervezas por favor’.

4. Don’t drink water from the tap. Buy sealed, bottled water. And as a general rule, don’t eat street food, unless you were born under a lucky star. Aint nobody got time for gastro! And don’t forget to see the travel doc before you depart, for all the medications you might need (especially gastro stop and altitude meds).

5. Don’t pat those cute stray dogs. ‘But they’re so cute!’ We know, but even if you’d had the rabies shot, it’s not worth the risk.

And a bonus tip, don’t let these tips stop you from having an incredible time in South America. Enjoy the good vibes, eat some empanadas, drink some Pisco Sours and dance the tango. There’s something about South America that gets into your bones. Let it.
